PUTIN, THE ROLE MODEL FOR ALTERNATIVE GLOBAL LEADERSHIP
The on-going Ukrainian crises and European parliamentary elections held recently have clearly demonstrated that post-Cold War global order is undergoing a strategic change and unipolarity has brought more misery for the humankind than the good old bipolar world. If one looks at Uncle Sam’s inability to control and tame the hyper power endowed upon her by history, one single reason comes to my mind, failure of leadership. It was not only the United Sates but the bandwagonned stooges like Britannia and the European power house of Germany and the rest of the larger west which failed to produce even one leader with a vision for 21st century. The Global chaos that we see today and the misery of people of Libya,Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and even Ukrainespeaks volume of the mess created by western leadership, driven by fancy agendas and corporate interests, making a mockery of the word humanity.
Unfortunately the controlled media and the academia in the west trumpeted the themes of End of History and Clash of Civilizations and tried to create cleavages amongst cultures and civilizations, resulting into further chaos. It was expected that humanity had reached a stage where larger understanding between different faiths and cultures will result into a more balanced and accommodative global order; however the holders of these ideals in the west failed on many accounts and treated the globe as a big market place where one currency and one culture was to prevail, the culture of MAC WORLD.
We find brother cutting the brother’s throat in the Middle East, rise of Neo Nazism in the West and the rising tensions between the local and the immigrants in the developed world. Did the three trillion dollars spent by the west in waging wars in the Middle East, West Asia and even Ukraine bring democracy and freedom to the people of Iraq, Syria, Libya, Afghanistan and Ukraine? Could this money be spent in a better fashion to serve the humanity? Could the US and the west use this money to stabilize their own economies instead of attempting to remove the regimes of Saddam , Gaddafi and Yanukovych? So who is responsible for the global chaos of the last three decades? Can we continue with this arrangement and what is the alternative? This is a million dollars question.
If we look around we find few states and leaders with limited ability and motivation to stem the tide of this global chaos, only one qualifies to provide an alternative leadership at global level and that is the Russian Federation under dynamic and prudent leadership of Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.
Mr Putin is credited with taking out Russia from the demoralising days of post Cold War period into a thriving economy. He has stabilised the Russian economy and re-established its prestige in the comity of nations.Globally he has lead Russia in various international forums like BRICS,G 20 and the CIS and successfully helped stabilise crises in international affairs. Putin has also acted as a bridge between the Europe and Asia being conscious of Russia’s geostrategic Position in Eurasia.
As per Wikipedia, “During Putin’s first premiership and presidency (1999–2008), real incomes increased by a factor of 2.5, real wages more than tripled; unemployment and poverty more than halved, and the Russians’ self-assessed life satisfaction rose significantly. Putin’s first presidency was marked by high economic growth: the Russian economy grew for eight straight years, seeing GDP increase by 72% in PPP (sixfold in nominal). As Russia’s president, Putin and the Federal Assembly passed into law a flat income tax of 13%, a reduced profits tax, and new land and legal codes. As Prime Minister, Putin oversaw large scale military and police reform. His energy policy has affirmed Russia’s position as an energy superpower. Putin supported high-tech industries such as the nuclear and defence industries. A rise in foreign investment contributed to a boom in such sectors as the automotive industry. Putin has cultivated a strongman image and is a pop cultural icon in Russia with many commercial products named after him”.
Putin has also displayed astuteness and dexterity in handling the Ukrainian crises, despite his warnings the likes of Victoria Nuland and US Ambassador Spite deliberately unleashed the forces of chaos in Ukraine and we find this beautiful country turning into something like Syria.
As per Voice of Russia UK, “Last week President Vladimir Putin delivered a keynote address at the plenary session of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum(SPIEF), which this year is dedicated to ‘Sustaining Confidence in a World Undergoing Transformation’.Vladimir Putin told the economic forum that the world’s top oil and gas producer should diversify from energy exports and pledged to boost major domestic banks and industries.Putin also said there is a plan to create a state fund to help replace imports from Western countries with domestic production.Gazprom’s natural gas supply deal with China will ultimately enable Russia to become a swing gas producer between Europe and Asia, added Putin. Russia and China signed a 30-year gas supply contract, worth a total of more than $400 billion, earlier this week during Putin’s visit to the country”.
For people in our part of the world and especially in Pakistan, the word International Community means essentially the west and global leadership only comprises Obama and company, even our intellectual debates in media and academia oninternational relationsare dominated by western schools of thought . Despite Russia’s special geostrategic position in Eurasia and Pakistan’s physical proximity to SCO countries we pay less attention to the rising rests including Russia. The CNN and BBC effect further augmented by Al Jezeera effect (all being the same) has almost blinded Pakistani public from what is happening in larger Eurasia. Pakistan needs to at least allow a balanced debate and study the emerging Russia under the dynamic leadership of President Putin as an alternative leadership model of global leadership. Pakistan should also establish a Eurasia Study Chair in all major universities to let the academia and our young generation study the rising economies in that region. We also need to introduce RT and Pravda viewership and readership in Pakistan so that people get a balanced view of what is happening in the world outside the prism of CNN and BBC. If Mr Putin could take Russia out of crises and back into a prestigious position in Eurasia within a decade, we can at least learn something from his leadership skills and study his persona as an alternative model of global leadership, after all what has Obama and Bush accomplished in their leadership role at global level ,chaos and further chaos.
