Brilliant, yes this is the word if I were going to describe the movie in one word. From the first scene to last scene the film took my breath away. It almost made me cry that what our society is filled it. The disgust, the insatiable desires and what is most sad is that we are still trying to hide ourselves with white cover and portray that everything is alright. I grew up thinking that our society is very clean and what we read in books was true. It was not the case because we have filth all around us, and we try to hide it. What Saadat Hasan Manto did was uncovered these stories and penned them with his satirical and candid approach. The film highlights only the controversial part of Manto’s actual life which was in his last stages after the partition and only tells stories with sexual references and in which prostitution was involved. There was only handful of these stories. I think the film was great but it didn’t really do any justice to Manto himself. Sarmad Sultan should have shown the early part of his life too. And why did he become a writer, why his stories are so straight forward and why he criticizes the society so much. One thing that I really like about the film was the character of Noor Jehan who thought was a true lady and we address her as ‘Madam’ was not what we thought of her. But she was a Manto’s friend and helped him in his struggles from time to time.
I am sorry my review was late because the film is getting from the screens and my advices to you is that go watch this film and see for yourself what a great writer we had in our midst which was appreciated in his time. But at least now he is getting the reward he deserves.
