Oscar fever is in full swing and movie buffs are placing their bets on who will win what at the 88th Academy Awards.
With every Oscar-worthy movie, comes an equally impressive salary for its leading men and women. Matt Damon reportedly earned $25 million for his role in the Martian, for which he may win Best Actor in a Leading Role; Jennifer Lawrence earned a slightly more humble $15 million for her role in Joy.
But how far do these staggering sums reach when it comes to real estate?
Pakistan’s best real estate website Lamudi.pk has done some calculations to work out exactly what an Oscar nominee could buy in the emerging markets with their salary.
With her salary of $15 million from Joy, Jennifer Lawrence could buy this three-bedroom condo, complete with a swimming pool, games room, and bar, in Makati, Metro Manila not only once but 10 times. If Jen wants to live alone, with that salary she could buy a one-bedroom luxury condo in the heart of Makati Central Business District 141 times!
Everyone knows that Tom Hanks is one of the highest paid actors in the universe. His last film, Bridge of Spies, has been nominated for Best Picture; for his last three major roles he has been paid around $11.6 million. With that, Hanks could afford to buy a luxury freehold villa in Bali, with views of surrounding rice fields from the sundeck, an enormous 27 times.
No stranger to the Academy, Matt Damon is up for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his work in the Martian. Matt could afford a lot of real estate with $25 million, including this entire residential tower in Business Bay, Dubai. The tower features 176 residential units, seven shops and a plethora of world-class amenities, such as a spa, a massage parlor and 24-hour concierge.
Rachel McAdams, who is up for a Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her work in Spotlight, reportedly received only $1.1 million for the film. Take that money, invest in real estate, and you could buy 11 contemporary apartments with a balcony, roof terrace and rooftop garden in Mexico City.
Everyone is waiting for Leonardo DiCaprio to finally win that Oscar. But if it doesn’t all go to plan, DiCaprio will still have his $20 million salary to spend on real estate. In fact, he could buy 65 boutique hotels in Kandy, soon to be Sri Lanka’s first ever smart city. One hotel has 10 ensuite guest rooms and views over the river – a great alternative investment opportunity to celebrate the win, or commiserate the loss.
